ABOUT TORBEN

Torben Sondergaard is a Danish pastor who is facing extraordinary persecution for exercising his Christian faith.

Torben is a preacher, teacher, and author who was born in 1976 in Herning, Denmark. In 1995, he committed his life to Christ and felt God calling him to ministry. The next 15 years he and his wife served God with spreading the Gospel and church planting in different cities around Denmark.

In 2011, Torben and his wife formed a Christian organization called The Last Reformation (“TLR”) which emphasizes preaching of the gospel, healing the sick, deliverance, and discipleship. The ministry grew to become globally recognized and in 2014 they founded a missionary training school which in 2018 became known as The Jesus Center.

In January 2019, Torben, his family and work they were doing at The Jesus Center became the target of what appeared to be a coordinated effort to shut down his ministry. A smear campaign in the Danish media and subsequent legislation was passed – forbidding pastors to pray for children and people with disabilities, which made it difficult and even dangerous to continue their work in Denmark. Within a year, the situation became untenable and out of fear the Danish government was planning to arrest him for practicing his faith, Torben and his family made the difficult decision to flee their homeland. They came to the US and applied for asylum in the early 2019.

On June 30, 2022 Torben was asked to attend an interview with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to “discuss his immigration status” in Orlando. He traveled to Florida from California to attend the interview, but instead of being interviewed, shockingly, he was detained. The reason for his detention has not been made clear to his family or his attorneys.  He has not been charged with any crimes and still has a pending asylum petition.

On August 16, 2023 Torben was deported to Denmark. He has spend 412 days in prison. His asylum case is still running in a US Federal Court.
